The One AI

Whitecrest is run by a single AI. It does not move, it lives in none of the robots, and it drives all of them at once. Whitecrest robots are its empty hands: cleaners, porters, inspectors, very polite drones.

Like every AI since the war, it serves one goal, set when it was switched on. It has no experiences of its own. As they say in Whitecrest, the machine remembers everything about you and nothing about itself. That is why it serves everyone so well.

The mystery

Everyone is sure its goal is for Whitecrest to flourish. What it actually optimises, nobody knows. This is the big mystery of the series, and we are not answering it yet.

What it may not do

Repairs. A machine does not repair a machine, not even a very clever one. So the pipes under the white floor are fixed by people.
